Weekly Wrap-up: A Winner & Earth Day Mania
Welcome to another weekly wrap-up. I’m sure you’re all itching to find out who won our Mother’s Day contest. Well, the wait is over. The winner of this year’s Mother’s Day contest is Susan! Please join me in congratulating Susan; she has won a 24-piece box of Vegan Caramels!
If you missed it, here’s Susan’s story:
My mother is an amazing mother, but the woman who raised her, my grandmother was phenomenal. She taught me about compassion toward all living things. She respected every flower that she came across and every animal she saw. At an early age, my grandmother told me that we all have hearts and feelings and therefore we always need to take care of … See more things around us. She taught me the lesson of life which is probably the biggest lesson I learned growing up. Now that I am a mother, I continue my grandmother’s legacy about compassion. I think being a great mother is also a mother who is a mother to the world!
Beautiful story, thank you for sharing and participating in the contest, Susan!
In other news, we had another strong performance by @weeklyadventure on our Twitter account. Talk about amazing support. We couldn’t be happier about the RT’ability and kindness that we get from @weeklyadventure. Thank you so much!
And of course, the web was a buzz with Earth Day events, news, and other goings on. Some blog posts or articles that I found useful and worth sharing include:
- Earth Day~Go Vegan To Be Green, by The Veggie Gal (you might have seen a similarly theme post somewhere – wink, wink)
- Author Ruby Roth Offers Earth Day Tips For Kids, by VEGdaily
And of course, this post wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the news of Food, Inc. making it to national Television this week! It’s a pretty good flick and I’m so happy that industrial farming issues are making it to mainstream media. And, Kudos to those who hosted a potluck during the showing…great idea!
That’s about it for this week’s social media news. Catch Allison’s Gourmet everyday on Twitter, Facebook, and Website. Happy weekend, Everyone!
Playing it Safe in the Kitchen: Preventing and Treating Thermal Burns
Last week, my daughter and I had a scary experience that made me want to write a post about burns and safety in the kitchen. When it happened, I knew very little about burns and now I know more than I ever thought I needed to. Seconds count when burns occur, so getting information before you need it is valuable. When in doubt, seek professional help or call 911. We did.
It was early in the morning and Olivia, my three year old, and I were still in our pajamas. Like many other moms I know, I was multi-tasking while making a pot of lentils: holding Olivia while I tried to adjust the lid on the pressure-cooker, which didn’t seem to be working quite right. Suddenly the lid, which was more pressurized than I had realized, popped off and Olivia and I were splashed with boiling water and steam.
Luckily, my body was mostly between her and the exploding pot but Olivia still received a pretty bad 2nd degree burn on one of her knees. I also got 2nd degree burns and blisters on my torso, thigh and my right inner arm. I share this story because I know how often we busy parents cook with our kids and how eager our children are to help with cooking and preparing food.
It would be easy to condemn pressure-cookers (and many people have!) because of horror stories about the old-fashioned types, but the new ones are very safe, as long as they are both functioning properly and used correctly. I have been using pressure-cookers for nearly 15 years and am quite competent at using them, but accidents can happen, even with expert skill (just think of the number of carpenters who are missing digits). So here are some safety tips to help younger children and parents stay safe while cooking:
- Always have your hands free and children at a safe distance (or out of the kitchen) when working at the stove. Involve children in stirring, measuring, and kneading instead.
- Cook on back burners when children are present.
- Make sure pot handles are turned inward so that they can’t be pulled down from below.
- Explain that hot things like pans, casserole dishes, toasters, stoves, oven doors, etc. are never to be touched.
- When your children are helping, be sure your focus is on them.
- Slow down. Do less. If you’re in a rush, do it yourself and plan another time to work on a kitchen project together.
Specific safety tips for using pressure cookers:
- Before you use your pressure cooker, check all of the parts to be sure they are clean, unclogged, and in proper position.
- Every year or so, perform regular maintenance to be sure rubber gaskets and seals are all in good condition.
- After cooking and when you are ready to open the pressure-cooker, always move the entire cooker into the sink, bring down pressure completely by running under cold water until the gauge drops, and then open the lid away from your body to prevent steam burns.
- Do extra research for more details and specifications.
If a small burn does occur, follow these first aid burn management guidelines. Seek professional help or call 911 for more serious burns or if you have any questions at all. A few tips:
- Immediately stop the burn by applying cold water to the affected area. Be sure to keep the rest of the body warm to prevent hypothermia.
- It’s best not to use ice since it can cause further damage to the skin by freezing. Continue to cool the burn with cold water.
- Never apply oils or ointments to a new burn.
- If there is broken skin, after it has cooled off (several hours) and ready to wrap, apply antibiotic/pain relief ointment, keep the wound covered and moist with a gel pad made for burns, since these types of pads won’t stick to tender skin. This will speed recovery.
- Alternative treatments include a blend of St. John’s Wort, Calendula, and Lavender oils as well as homeopathic remedies.
There are so many joys that can be experienced through sharing food-making with our families. Let’s keep it fun and enjoyable by staying mindful of safety!
The “Hot Cocoa” Myth
There is a myth about hot cocoa that I would like to dispel: it’s not just for cold winter days! That’s why we call our hot cocoa “organic drinking chocolate.”
It’s good any time of the year in any way you can think of to drink it. It’s awesome added to our fair-trade coffee to make hot or iced mochas. I also love it in shakes, smoothies and even fudgesicles (try coconut milk for that extra creamy texture)! Can you tell I’m already daydreaming about summer? My favorite refreshing chocolate treat is our peppermint drinking chocolate made into cold, creamy, mint chocolate milk. Okay, myth dispelled…
Also, don’t forget to enter our Mother’s Day Contest, it ends this week!

Let’s start with the good stuff, shall we: FREE sweets! In honor of Mother’s Day, Allison would like to give away some of her favorite, hand-selected sweets. You’ve got to earn them, but don’t worry, it’s easy: just tell us about an outstanding mom in your life, it can be your mother, grandmother, a friend, or even you!
Simply go to our Facebook Fan Page and post to our wall. We are looking for heart-warming stories (get creative with videos, pictures, and songs too!) about an amazing mom that you know! Entries started coming in yesterday and the contest closes at 5PM Pacific on Thursday, April 29th. The lucky winner will be announced on Friday via our Facebook Fan Page and Blog.
Speaking of Facebook, on Tuesday I asked if you work in a vegan-friendly environment and we had a mixed response. Aside from the lovely Angel McNall who works from home (lucky!), most of you weren’t thrilled with the lack of vegan-friendliness in your work place. But don’t be blue, you’re not alone! Check out this helpful blog post: Top 10 Bad Experiences of Vegan Professionals in the Workplace – and how best to deal with them.
Vegan chatter on Twitter was pretty slow across the board this week (everyone on vacation?). Wednesdays are usually vegan mania but this week: not so much. Despite that, @allisonsgourmet had some amazing and ongoing RTs from @weeklyadventure and @adukipress. Thank you so much for your support, Friends!

On to one of the most talked about topics this week: Starbucks’ vegan frappuccinos. It seemed like everyone and their mother were blogging about Starbucks this week. And I will admit, even though I’m not a coffee drinker I did go into a Starbucks this week and order their new vegan frappuccino, simply because I wanted to show my support. It was just okay. But for those of you who are super excited about this: hooray! And for those of you who’d rather not support the Starbucks franchise, click here to check out Allison’s Gourmet Peruvian Femenino certified organic fair-trade coffee.
Well, that’s about it for this week. Don’t forget to enter our awesomely delicious Mother’s Day contest and happy social networking!
Happy Earth Day!
For Earth Day this year, I’m encouraging everyone to go vegan! Did you know that a vegan diet saves nearly 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide per person per year when compared with the average American diet? That is more carbon savings than switching to a hybrid car! Yes, drive a hybrid if you can–but if you want to make a really big investment in your health and the health of the planet without making a large financial investment, go vegan and encourage all your friends to join you!
With summer on its way, and more and more farmer’s markets springing up all over the country, as well as new vegan products like Daiya and Follow Your Heart Vegan Gourmet Cheese coming out every day, it’s easier than ever to live a happy, healthy plant-based life.
Whether you’re new to veganism or have been vegan for some time and are missing your old favorites, be sure to check out recipes from my vegan comfort food column, ‘Veganize It!’ in VegNews Magazine.

Strong Women, Great Coffee
Did you know that the majority of the world’s coffee is grown by small farms and cooperatives, and that coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world next to oil? These two factors combine to create widespread abuse and exploitation of the people who grow, harvest and process most coffee.
Harsh gender inequality, poverty, and abuse are rampant in the coffee producing regions of the world, especially for the 30% of small farmers who are women. Most women coffee producers have no rights, little income, and are raising families by themselves. To help support these women, we are proud to offer Peruvian Femenino certified organic fair-trade coffee. This exciting coffee variety is grown on woman-owned and operated farms along the Incan Trail in the Northern Andean Rainforest as part of the Café Femenino Project.
Founded in 2004, the Café Femenino Project now includes more than 1,500 women in Bolivia, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru who work together to achieve empowerment, build supportive social networks, and earn decent incomes through the production and sale of their own fair-trade coffee. Let’s drink to social equality!
