Olivia, the Manifester for Animals!
Our daughter, Olivia, is a life-long vegan and has compassion in every one of her multi-billion cells. David and I are rather anti-clutter and luckily, Olivia doesn’t seem much attached to “stuff,” always preferring to play with another person instead of a toy. As her 5th birthday neared, friends and family started asking what to give as a gift. Since more things weren’t at the top of any of our lists, I set out to research meaningful gifts. I came across several ideas and although one stood out as my preference, I felt it was important that Olivia make the decision, so I presented some options from which she could choose:
- Ask her friends to make a gift for her or draw her a picture.
- Ask her friends if they had a toy or book they loved but were finished with that they might want to pass along to her
- Let people choose to give get whatever they wanted
- Ask for a small donation (say $5) that she could pool together and take half to go shop for a gift of her choosing and donate the other half to any organization she wanted.
David thought for sure she’d go for #3. I had no idea what she’d choose but I secretly hoped for #4. Olivia understood everything about the first three options, but wanted to know more about #4. There was a lot of learning in this exercise, no matter which choice she made, so that alone made it worthy. As soon as I explained it to her, she immediately chose #4. We asked if she was sure and she was solidly confident and instantly announced that our favorite local animal sanctuary, Animal Place, would be the beneficiary. David and I told her that however much money she donated, we would double it. Although requesting donations is an unusual gift for a 5 year old, I hoped that the nominal amount would ease any discomfort of more traditional givers.
After Olivia received all the gifts from both family and friends, she learned about sweet Carmen and declared that all of her money would be going to Animal Place. Such generosity! We suggested she keep a little for herself, but she was adamant that Carmen needed that money more than she did. About a month later, we finally went after school one day to meet Carmen and the new piglets who had recently moved in to Animal Place. I was so busy getting ready for the busy holiday season at Allison’s Gourmet, that I completely forgot to bring the adorable card Olivia made, along with her donation. Gah! I felt terrible and set my mind for us to make a special trip to deliver it. Today is that day.
I recently learned that Olivia’s money will be doubled again, thanks to a donor who is matching all funds donated to Animal Place, through December 25, up to $8,000. I’m thrilled to share that Olivia’s $100, which doubled to $200 with our donation will now become $400 for Animal Place! Talk about manifestation. This girl has some power! Watch this video of her playing with Carmen.
If you have anything at all that you can give, you could be a master manifester too and double your gift automatically now through Christmas. Please make it an even better holiday season for these beautiful animal friends who get to live out their life in sanctuary. Give today.
Warm holiday wishes to you and yours,
P.S. Get one of these fabulous shirts!
With GMO Labels Still Missing, Look for the Opposite
As the discussion over genetically modified foods heats up, here’s a great look at the conversation in Forbes magazine about the Right2Know campaign. We’ve always emphasized our use of pure, clean, organic ingredients at Allison’s and are so excited about the recent expositions of the tremendous amounts of GMOs that have made their way into the food system. It’s more important than ever to vote with your dollars and buy organic whenever you can. Assert your right to know and help get GMOs labeled now!
With GMO Labels Still Missing, Look for the Opposite by Michelle Maisto, Forbes.com
The White House is 313 miles from my Brooklyn neighborhood, but in early October, 50 or so people set off walking there, as part of the Right2Know campaign. Along the way they were joined by hundreds of others, and rallying in Washington, D.C., Oct. 16,
they called on regulators to insist that genetically modified or engineered foods/organisms (known as GEs, or GMOs) be labeled as such, and for President Obama to keep his 2007 campaign promise to do this.
The effort felt in line with the Occupy movement — with the voicing of frustrations that even in simple, common sense ways there seems to be a system working against the majority of us (even back in a 2001 ABC News poll, 93% of people said they wanted GE food labeling). But it was also just one more effort in a decades-long fight — Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich has introduced a Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2010 — and as far as I can tell the latest effort to fail to get the job done.
There’s a lot of debate about whether or not it’s safe to eat GM foods, but what’s being argued for is simply that they be labeled. We’re living in a time where it’s illegal not to tell consumers if a product is made in a room where nuts are handled, but food can be tinkered with at the DNA level and no one is obligated to say so.
“The denial of food labeling is linked directly to a food dictatorship by Monsanto Corporation,” Vandana Shiva, an activist and the Right2Know keynote speaker said in a statement, voicing a common opinion.

5 Foods That Fight The Flu
Now that the holiday season is in full swing, that can only mean something else is upon us, too: Flu season. But we found this wonderful article by a fave vegan blogger/Twitterer, Whitney Lauritson (aka EcoVeganGal). What you eat does make a difference in your immunity. Got more flu-fighting food faves? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter!
5 Foods That Fight The Flu
by Whitney Lauritson, OrganicAuthority.com
This time of year is an immune system’s nightmare – coughing, sneezing, fever, chills, exhaustion – yep, it’s flu season. If you feel the onset of these dreaded symptoms, take a look at what’s in your kitchen before getting shot up with a vaccine. If you find lots of salty chips and sugary cookies, your sick coworker’s germs may not be the blame; the saying is true: You are what you eat. Processed fo
ods stripped of sustenance will leave you run down and defenseless, while fresh, nutritious fare results in an energized, resilient body.
Save the tissue for wrapping presents – here are the top 5 foods you should be eating for a healthy holiday season.
1. Garlic
Garlic is more than just a tasty additive to savory dishes and vampire (or bad date) defense – it has some impressive antioxidant properties. It’s trademark odor is the result of an oily, sulfurous substance called allicin, which can help prevent and shorten the duration of infections when used daily in cooking or taken as a supplement. Garlic is most potent when eaten fresh, so add it into your food after heating it – but be sure to warn anyone before they get within range of your breath!
2. Green Tea
People who prefer hot green tea in the morning to a cup ‘o Joe are getting more than just a smoother energy boost. This earthy beverage is also high in bacteria-fighting antioxidants and an immune-boosting chemical called epigallocatechin gallate. Enjoying a few cups a day will keep away free radicals and soothe the entire body. If you want to stay clear of sniffles, have some nut-based milk (like almond), as dairy milk can stir up mucus.

Friday with Friends: Chloé Jo Davis
Beyond being named one of the “Hottest Jews in the World,” by HEEB Magazine, Chloé Jo Davis is a bona fide green, vegan vixen. The editor-in-chief of The GirlieGirl Army, a green guide to glamazon living that boasts 12 years of archives and a fan base that includes major celebrities and many thousands of readers, you may also have seen Chloé as celebrity dirt’s host on RiverWired and in an Errol Morris-directed national commercial for Silk Soy Milk. An activist, writer, green expert, animal rescue warrior, radio host, online personality and ethical fashion expert, she’s also one of the celebrity judges for our Tee and Tote Design Contest happening right now. Chloé told all about motherhood (her son, Panther Britain, was born April 15th, 2010), glamazon living and her favorite vegan foods in a recent interview with Allison’s Gourmet.
Allison’s Gourmet: What items are always on your grocery shopping list aka the foods you could NEVER live without? And has anything food-wise changed since the birth of your vegan son, Panther?
Chloé Jo Davis: I was mainly raw prior to having Panther. Post birthing (and attachment parenting parents who breastfeed will totally get this) we still haven’t slept, so carbs are how I get through the day. I wish I could say I was exclusively green juice and kale chips… but I’m more like green juice, kale chips, roasted potatoes, corn, fresh coconut waters, kombuchas,
Israeli pickles, cous cous, vegan jerky, vegan sushi, guac, roasted chestnuts, really well marinated tempeh or tofu, white sweet potatoes, avocados, hummus (homemade, of course! hint: a spice called za’atar changes the game), and obsessed with all fresh fruits and veggies, particularly those on the more exotic side. I live on jicama, and I’m mainly a salty gal. I love crackers and a good pretzel! I just love food. I could (and often do) eat 24 hours a day. Plus I cook a lot and I live in NYC, home to a billion vegan restaurants! I don’t stop with the eating. Goddess bless my appetite (shouldn’t we all applaud women who can EAT more? I’m so done applauding women who are proud to have eaten nothing but a side salad all day!)
AG: Your web site, www.GirlieGirlArmy.com spans the gamut with content, covering everything from travel to shopping. Which veg-friendly city is next on your list? What would you pack for the trip?
CJD: We just missed a family gathering in Israel, which I’m bummed about because the produce in Israel is next level, just the best. Between that and the falafel, do you really need anything else?! But Panther is too wild for long plane rides right now. The kid is a daredevil… he never ever stop! We’re planning on visiting our friends at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary and Farm Sanctuary in September… but those aren’t exactly in large cities!
So, next real trip will be in October to the World Peace Yoga Jubilee which I have to say, is one of the most special, wonderful events I’ve ever been to. It’s held outside of Cincinnati and it’s the only all-vegan yoga conference that I’ve ever heard of… but it’s so beyond that. The food is sensational, the people beautiful (in and out) and the energy just quite magical. I highly recommend it! Oh, and me and my gf Alex Jamieson will be speaking again on a panel with some genius ethical icons. Lucky us! What will I pack? Probably a bunch of yoga clothes and a few good outfits that I’ll end up getting from one of my legendary clothing swaps. And I never leave home without a pair of OlsenHaus and Cri de Coeur heels.
AG: What’s your favorite summer recipe to share?
CJD: I don’t think you can beat a massive summer salad with fresh corn, chickpeas, berries, dandelion and spinach greens and tons of good olives and a really fresh crusty ciabatta (clearly, I’m not gluten-free though I find it an interesting next potential step!) and then a homemade sorbet (two minutes to make!) in your blender.
I also grill tons of vegan sausages and make big stir fries with whatever is fresh and organic. You can’t beat Bragg Liquid Aminos, nutritional yeast, and some cracked pepper with ANY veg.
AG: What other vegan sites do you visit on a regular basis?
CJD: Yours, because it’s beautiful and I heart you. I have too many favorites to list, but the gist is – if I write about them on GGA, I mostly likely regularly visit them!
AG: You’ve been featured as an eco-beauty expert. What are some of your favorite finds?
CJD: Oy vey… too much pressure! It’s my job to discover the green and fabulous, so I’m up to my shnozz in favorites. But here are a few:
- Soy nail polish remover
– non toxic, vegan – and perfect to byor (bring your own remover) when hitting up the mani-pedi spot. - Heart of Darkness Shoes – love that my girls at Cri De Coeur launched a sub line which is more affordable for those of us on a budget, but still kept the amazingly cool and gorgeous design that we go to them for.
- Sugar-based Hairspray – it’s a revolution. It works and it doesn’t stink or give you cancer. Halle-fricking-lullah!
- Dalia Gowns – it’s not easy to find black tie worthy gowns that aren’t made from silk. Dalia MacPhee designs gorgeous and vegan gowns for us silk-free ladies.
- Tata Harper skin care line – the face oils are special. You notice a difference in your skin immediately.
AG: What’s your favorite Allison’s Gourmet product? Any product suggestions?
CJD: I’m not a big chocolate gal, though my husband Jeremy is. I tend to buy him your organic brownies, while your vegan toffee and peanut brittle blow me away. Seriously, how dare you. Generally though, I’m more of a tart tartin kinda gal, what about some more fruity confections – maybe with less white sugars and more dates for sweetness? Dare to dream!
I’m loving baking with puréed dates lately!

Weekly Wrap-up: Sweet Teeth and All American Potato Salad
This week on Facebook we took a mini-poll about–what else–sweets! We found that most of you enjoy something sweet every day. We do too! And, as it turns out, that may not be such a bad thing. A recent study shows that kids who eat candy regularly are less
overweight than kids who don’t. Maybe there’s something to that “everything in moderation” theory after all (well, maybe not *every*thing!)…And we know first-hand that vegan and organic confections are a much healthier way to indulge our sweet tooth.
We welcomed lots of new fans and friends to our Facebook family, which is growing so fast! Thank you all for that! We’re also quite close to our 1,000th Twitter follower, and we’re excited about growing our family there too. If you haven’t visited us yet on Twitter, please come join the sweet talk!
In case you didn’t see the news, the word is in: Dads love organic, vegan fudge! We had an overwhelming demand for our vegan fudge during Father’s Day, so keep that in mind for all of you out there with Dads (or Dads-to-be as the case may be!)
Hopefully you have lots of relaxing and celebrating planned for the holiday weekend. Hard to believe it’s already July. Independence Day falls on a Monday this year—our favorite day of the week, of course, because it’s Meatless Monday! Whether you’re firing up the grill with veggie burgers, kabobs, or dogs, there’s one side-dish must for every July 4th picnic and that’s potato salad. Allison’s recipe is so simple and yummy, we hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do! Once you give the recipe a try, Tweet pics to us @allisonsgourmet or upload them to our Facebook page and we’ll make sure to spread them around. Happy Celebrating!
Recipe: All-American Potato Salad
Serves 6
8 cups yellow potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
3 large celery ribs chopped finely
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons red onion, minced
1 cup vegan mayonnaise
1/4 cup fresh dill, chopped
2 teaspoons salt
3/4 teaspoon dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon fresh black pepper
1. In a stock pot fitted with a large steamer basket, place 2 cups of water and add potatoes. Bring to a boil and steam for 15 minutes, until potatoes begin to yield to an inserted fork. Transfer potatoes to a large bowl and allow to cool for at least 20 to 30 minutes.
2. In a small bowl, combine celery, onion, mayonnaise, dill, salt, mustard, and pepper. Add to potatoes and fold to combine.
Beautiful Non-Toxic Nails: Review and Giveaway!
I’ve led an increasingly wholesome life over the past 20 years. Naturally, when I was pregnant in 2006, I became even more careful about what I was putting in (and on) my body. Olivia’s 4 years old now, and her latest request is nail polish like mine (even though I rarely use it). Well, melt my Mama heart, how cute is that?!
Doing her nails would be a fun way for us to bond and yet I didn’t feel good about the ingredients in nail polishes, even though I bought them at the health food store. Especially since the smell is so strong; I still have to put it on outdoors because I’m chemically-sensitive. Instantly I decided; if it’s not pure enough for my child, it’s not pure enough for me either! I vowed to her that I would stop using nail polish altogether until I found a product I could feel good about both of us using. I’m happy to report that day has come!
Natalie Bauss and Katy Scheffler are two West Michigan moms who faced a similar situation and did something wonderful about it–they created Keeki Pure & Simple, a brand of non-toxic USDA Organic Certified cosmetics. They have a lovely line of 16 food-named nail polishes like Glazed Donut and Chocolate Covered Cherry. There are fun colors for the kid in everyone, elegant colors for adults, and there’s even a color (the bottle on the far left) that is seemingly invisible, but glows in the dark! Spy nail polish? Super cool!
On top of all that fun, they’re way better for the world (and our bodies) than traditional nail polish since they’re certified organic, 100% biodegradable, water-based, vegan, and free of gluten, toluene, formaldehyde and phthalates! Best of all, these polishes (and the polish remover) don’t have that terrible toxic smell. Yippee!! Because they’re such pure and natural products, I have discovered that if you want your nails to stay beautiful for more than one day without chipping, the base and top coats are a definite must.
I discovered Keeki at my Natural Products Expo West adventure this spring and tried out several of the colors.
When I got home Olivia loved the look so much she wanted to try different colors too! All the colors are so beautiful and Keeki is committed to only adding to their palette, so if you fall in love with a color, you needn’t worry about it being discontinued. Women after my own heart!
And speaking of women after my own heart, they’re letting us do a giveaway of their products just for AG Sweet Talk readers!
Comment here on our blog telling us your favorite Keeki color and we’ll choose a winner at random one week from today, on Wednesday, May 18th. That lucky reader will receive 1 Keeki Nail Polish in Pink Frosting, 1 Keeki Nail Polish Base Coat, 1 Keeki Nail Polish Top Coat, and 1 Keeki Nail Polish Remover, all vegan! (Retail Value: $33.49).
This Giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Hilly, our lucky winner!
Just in case you don’t win the giveaway, and you’d still like some polish to add to your summer fun, Keeki is also offering our readers 20% off one order by entering the coupon code “take20off” during checkout!
Beware: their lip products contain beeswax–something they promised me they’d work on replacing. I’ll keep my beautifully polished fingers crossed!
Celebrating Vegan Easter
Spring is springing around here (finally) and we’re all looking forward to more time outdoors, working in the garden and, of course, Easter.
Mostly we celebrate Easter by being outside in the springtime weather. Amidst the wildflowers we hide and hunt for plastic eggs filled with treats (Solid Chocolate Eggs work great for this), and our 4-year-old Olivia loves to decorate wooden eggs as well. Although Olivia doesn’t eat much sugar, she loves getting vegan eggs filled with stickers, nuts, and other treats. Older children and adults will enjoy a gift basket brimming with fresh fruit, beautiful Truffle and Caramel Filled Eggs, and adorable Chocolate Bunnies, too.
This year I think we’ll do brunch outside (weather permitting) highlighted by a seasonal version of my Frittata using local, organic asparagus and vegan cheese. Versatile and delicious, it enjoys almost any accompaniment. Continuing the Springtime theme, we’ll also be enjoying strength-building greens and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Summer will be here before we know it!
Wishing you could share Easter with loved ones far away? Our elegant Easter-themed chocolate gifts will spread springtime joy wherever they go.
How will you be celebrating Easter this year?

Allison’s Gourmet: What inspired you to adopt a vegan diet/lifestyle?
KG: The short version is that it was a crazy amount of work, and I’m grateful to have had the experience. It really pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to face something that I was very afraid of doing. I always think it’s a good thing to face challenges and realize that we can actually do more than we think we’re capable of. That being said, I don’t know that I have any interest in repeating the experience, for many reasons (I signed a pretty hefty confidentiality agreement, so I have to have a somewhat abridged answer here), though I’m glad to have done it once.
I’m also rotating in some old posts that feature holiday recipes so that people can still use the blog as a resource since this is the time of year when so many of us are either hosting or attending parties and need an easy dish to bring along.
KG: I’m definitely not the nutrition expert here as sometimes all I’m able to eat is toast or oatmeal, though I try my best to focus on getting lots of protein and fiber. I would definitely tell people to stick with the diet that they’re most comfortable with, and don’t worry about people judging you or telling you that you’re hurting the baby by eating a vegan diet. There’s plenty of information out there to support your choice. You need to do what’s right for you, and having a doctor and partner that support you is helpful. I’m very fortunate that our doctor was totally unfazed by our diet and even made the comment that most of her vegan patients were healthier than the non-vegans. The majority of foods that you’re not supposed to eat during pregnancy aren’t vegan anyway, so you already have a leg up there!
KG: Definitely fresh fruit. Living in Southern California, we’re very fortunate to be able to get fresh fruit and other produce every weekend at our local farmers’ market. We always have broccoli, romaine and kale on hand. I also like to have quinoa, brown rice and pasta in the pantry, along with chickpeas and black beans. Between those and other pantry staples, we can usually pull together an easy weeknight meal.
AG: Do you have a favorite seasonal meal idea or recipe you’d like to share?
You know I love
