I’m sure by now you’ve heard of the horrible acts of animal cruelty that were uncovered by footage taken at the Conklin dairy farm in Ohio. The news about the Mercy for Animals undercover video has been all over the Internet the last two weeks. Check this link to learn about what is being done to address the issue.
Allison posted this comment about the video:
Why am I vegan? For me it’s not a choice. I know too much and refuse to contribute to the suffering of another being. The depth of suffering by a dairy cow is unparalleled. There is no dairy without a calf; cows are artificially impregnated and their babies are ripped away from them at birth so that humans can steal their milk. If the baby is female, she is forced into the same lifelong impregnation cycle as her mother. If he is a boy, he becomes veal.
Additionally, there are some terribly sadistic people who work in these facilities. I am sorry to be the bearer of this truth, but cannot renounce my responsibility to it. If you have ever said, “but I love milk and cheese,” please watch this video and at least know what you’re contributing to for the pleasure of your palate.
By bearing witness to this suffering, we can become their voices.
On to happier news – last week the United Nations announced its support of the vegan diet. This is a huge step for the vegan community! For a nice yet brief report on the issue check out The Discerning Brute (great blog!).
That’s it for this week’s wrap-up. Stay tuned for more updates, blog posts, tweets, and Facebook posts.

Coming soon…Valentine’s Day!
Although the Holidays seem to be just barely behind us, Valentine’s Day is also just around the corner! In fact, I find that looking forward to this love-struck holiday and shopping
for unique valentine gifts for my honey are great ways to survive these cold, dark, wintry days. The preferred Valentine’s Day gift is chocolate, of course, and we certainly have plenty of that here at Allison’s. We also offer some other unique Valentine gifts like the swoon-inducing combination of Classic Peanut Brittle, Crunchy Almond Toffee and Vanilla Caramels in our Classic Vanilla Lover’s Gift Set, or the simple elegance of premium organic, fair-trade coffee
and tea samplers. If these treats sound more like something for you than for your partner, may I remind you that there’s nothing wrong with a little innocent hint-dropping. In fact, tell us which one of our items you’d most like with your candlelit dinner and, at the end of the week, we’ll send one lucky winner an instant gift certificate towards their next order (hint, hint).
Welcome to Our Fabulous Future!
